Impact Investing – Creating Strong Returns While Bettering the World

 

Impact investing is an exciting and rapidly growing industry powered by investors who are determined to generate social and environmental impact, as well as financial returns. This is taking place all over the world, and across asset classes like public stocks, venture capital and fixed income. 

 

Impact investment has attracted a wide variety of investors, both individual and institutional, with the industry set to grow from around $50 billion today to $500 billion within the next decade. In this session, Haas alums will explore the history of impact investing, corporate sustainability, and investment strategies that capture attractive return while doing good. 

 

Our keynote speakers will include individuals with backgrounds in corporate responsibility, startups, institutional money management and family office investment.

Sonya Hetrick 

Sonya Hetrick has a strong background in both traditional investment analysis and environmental, social and governance (ESG) analysis, with previous work experience at Google, Bailard Investment Management, and Ecotrust, an environmental nonprofit. Sonya is the recipient of Amnesty International USA's Patrick Steward Human Rights Award for her volunteer work in India and Thailand. She holds a B.S. from American University and an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, where she was Co-President of the Haas Impact Investing Network. She is on the Organizing Committee for Women in Corporate Responsibility and served on the Agenda Committee for the SRI Conference on Sustainable, Responsible, Impact Investing from 2012-2018. She holds the Fundamentals of Sustainability Accounting (FSA) charter and passed the CFA level I and II exams.

 

David Sternlicht

David joined Jordan park in 2018. Prior to Jordan Park, he was an Associate Investment Diretor at Cambridge Associates, where he worked from 2011 to 2016. In this role, he led investment due diligence on opportunities across asset classes and impact themes, spearheaded key research efforts, and advised several families and nonprofits. David has worked in various venture capital startup advisory roles, including with Industry Ventures, Uprising, Mercatus, Sunvapor, and GV. David earned his B.A. from Washington and Lee University and MBA from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, where he was an Impact Investing Fellow focused on entrepreneurship and venture capital. 

 

 

Claire Veuthey 

Claire has worked to help investors better integrate environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) factors for the last decade. She has worked in research, investment, product, and business development roles in London, Toronto, Singapore, Amsterdam, and San Francisco. Before joining OpenInvest as Director of ESG + Impact, she was Head of ESG for the Wells Fargo Social Impact Investing team. As a member of the NASDAQ Entrepreneurial Center’s Young Executive Advisory Board, she drove the mission to support entrepreneurs globally, with a particular focus on social enterprises. She also served as an advisor to the Sustainable Accounting Standards Board during its inaugural year. Claire holds an M.A. From King’s College London and a Licence from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. 

 

Billy Hwan 

Billy J. Hwan is a Portfolio Manager of the Parnassus Endeavor Fund and a Senior Research Analyst. He joined Parnassus Investments in 2012 and was previously a Parnassus research intern. His prior experience includes equity research at Dodge & Cox in San Francisco and at the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation. Mr. Hwan received his bachelor's degree in engineering from Stanford University and a master's degree in accountancy from the University of Houston. He graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley with his master's degree in business administration. Mr. Hwan holds the CPA and CFA designations, and was a former Blakemore Freeman Fellow.
