This training presents the pillars for group dynamics, theory, and practice inspired by Irvin Yalom. Covering topics related to types of therapeutic groups, how to form therapy groups (i.e. screening process), strategies for marketing a group this training ends with strategies to support clients who hold marginalized identities.
This training is geared toward mental health or medical providers seeking to gain greater competencies related to practicing group therapy. This course will briefly discuss the theoretical underpinnings of group dynamics and practice and will provide helpful tips for forming different groups, screening participants for groups, managing group conflict, terminating groups, and marketing groups in a variety of settings.
This training will conclude by discussing the benefits of group therapy for clients who hold marginalized identities as well as provide useful strategies to employ in group therapy.

3 CEs available to NYS LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMSWs, LCATs, NYS Licensed Psychologists and NYS Licensed Psychoanalysts provided by Hudson Valley Professional Development, LLC upon successful completion of training.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will understand the core concepts of group therapy, theory, and practice.
2. Participants will learn strategies for forming different groups, screening participants for groups, managing group conflict, terminating groups, and marketing groups in a variety of settings.
3. Participants will learn about benefits of group therapy for clients who hold marginalized identities.
4. Participants will be provided with tools and resources necessary to both practice and employ in group therapy.

Nyx Melody, LMHC-D (they/them/theirs & fae/faer/faers) is a queer, panromantic, non-binary, trans femme New York State licensed mental health counselor with diagnostic privilege, clinical supervisor, educator and consultant on anti-oppression, mental health, gender/sexuality, and LGBTQIA+ issues. They have had experience working with individuals, couples, and groups who are struggling with various issues, including but not limited to: trauma/abuse, gender/sexual identity, anxiety, depression, substance use, acculturation, racial identity exploration, and dismantling internalized inferiority and/or superiority.
Nyx completed a dual masters degree: Masters of the Arts in Psychological Counseling and a Masters of Education in Mental Health Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University, where faer took extensive coursework and engaged in research initiatives surrounding queer and gender expansive microaggressions/mental health concerns.
They worked at a queer affirmative group private practice and now run a successful private practice for therapy, coaching, and consultation services. Fae also works as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology & Education at Teachers College, Columbia University teaching mental health counseling graduate students. Nyx is an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Applied Psychology at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development teaching group dynamics, cross cultural psychology, and lab for individual counseling skills to graduate students in mental health counseling.
