Event description
This online workshop will provide you with the tools you need to become a more proactive ally to transgender folks in your everyday life.

About this event

Hi! Are you looking for the tools and support you need to become a proactive ally to trans folks? You've come to the right place :)

This workshop focuses on role-playing scenarios that I have experienced time and time again to help you seamlessly translate the workshop material to actionable steps in your everyday life! I will role play the scenes with a co-host, and offer tools and tips for each scenario, with a Q&A portion at the end. It is structured to be accessible for folks of varied levels of knowledge.

What I have found is often the biggest barrier to showing up as an ally for trans folks, is that people lack both the information and confidence to ask the questions that would help trans people feel safer in spaces.

In the past two years I’ve changed my name and advocated for my pronouns to be used in new spaces: both in university, and in a service job—I’ve taken what I learned in these experiences and created templates of scenarios to explain to cisgender folks how to respectfully engage with trans folks during these everyday interactions. I didn’t see resources out there that offered this kind of modeling of conversations, and I wanted folks to feel prepared for these scenarios, so other trans folks didn’t have to go through the experiences I have.

My goal is that you walk away from this course with actionable knowledge to implement in your daily life—an awareness of the challenges trans folks face, the confidence to take action when you encounter trans exclusive spaces, an ability to be humble, and the capacity to navigate uncomfortable situations. These are lifelong skills—however, I consider them the most important skills you can have when working toward proactive allyship.

You’ll walk away from this workshop with an understanding of:

—How to actively participate in creating safe spaces for trans folks.

  • Affirming ways to respond to name changes, and pronoun shares.
  • What misgendering and deadnaming are, and how they impact trans folks’ safety.
  • Mistakes happen, this isn’t about perfection—rather it is about learning to take responsibility and make active efforts to repair after misgendering or deadnaming someone.

—Ways to use your cisgender privilege.

—Common terms and definitions.

—Pronouns, and how to practice them.

As well as worksheets that review the materials addressed in the workshop.

This workshop will be hosted via Zoom. You will be emailed a Zoom invite before the event. There are a few tickets reserved for those who would like to attend who are experiencing financial hardship. Please reach out to me at devin+questions@devingaine.com to connect with me about these options.
