Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a topic nearly all clinicians will encounter with up to 65% of couples who seek therapy having had at least one prior violent episode. This training is geared toward any provider wanting to increase their confidence in assessing and ethically responding to IPV.

This course will provide an overview of foundational IPV concepts with a focus on its presentation in couples therapy. The presenter will review information related to prevalence, definitions, and risk factors. Following, participants will learn techniques for assessing the level of violence happening in relationships and factors relevant for treatment decision-making, including which couples could be candidates for conjoint (couples) therapy.

2 CEs available to NYS LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMSWs, LCATs, NYS Licensed Psychologists and NYS Licensed Psychoanalysts provided by Hudson Valley Professional Development, LLC upon successful completion of training.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

-differentiate and describe types of IPV.

-identify IPV risk factors.

-explain determining factors relevant for treatment planning when IPV is present.

-identify at least one method for increasing safety through assessment and treatment response.

In accordance with the NY State Department of Education guidelines, in order to receive continuing education contact hours, a participant needs to be present for the duration of the workshop/training. Therefore, participants who arrive late or leave the event early will not be granted a certificate of completion.

Dr. Rachel Diamond is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and American Association of Marriage And Family Therapy (AAMFT) Approved Supervisor. She maintains a private practice in Chicago, Rachel Diamond, PLLC, where she primarily works with individuals and couples presenting with issues related to pregnancy and adjusting to new parenthood. Additionally, she is an adjunct supervisor for The Family Institute at Northwestern University where she provides supervision to MFT therapists-in-training. Dr. Diamond worked for nearly a decade as a university professor and training director in accredited MFT programs, where she taught and supervised hundreds of graduate students.

Her writings can be found in journals such as Family Process, Journal of Family Therapy, Family Relations, and Contemporary Family Therapy, as well as her Psychology Today blog “Preparing for Parenthood”.
