About this event

Health • Mental health

As clinicians, we frequently work with clients who experience emotional dysregulation—especially children and parents navigating big emotions like worry, sadness, or stress. This training offers an accessible and clinically grounded introduction to nervous system-informed care using Polyvagal Theory, Dan Siegel’s hand model of the brain, and the concept of “flipping your lid” to deepen understanding of emotional reactivity and co-regulation.

This training is ideal for clinicians working with children, families, or emotionally reactive clients who want to incorporate nervous system and somatic concepts into their therapeutic approach.

Led by Dr. Sara Teta, a licensed New York State psychologist, and specialist in trauma-informed and attachment-oriented care, this training will equip mental health professionals with practical tools to support regulation, connection, and emotional safety in both child and adult clients.

3 CEs available to NYS LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMSWs, LCATs, NYS Licensed Psychologists and NYS Licensed Psychoanalysts provided by Hudson Valley Professional Development, LLC upon successful completion of training.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

-understand the roles of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system in emotional activation.

-identify brain regions involved in nervous system responses using the hand model of the brain.

-recognize safety and danger cues in clinical settings.

-utilize co-regulation strategies to support clients during emotional distress.

-adapt interventions for pre-verbal and non-verbal children.

-incorporate child-friendly language to teach nervous system regulation.
