Can “We the People” Talk With Each Other?
Event Information
About this Event
Description:Workshop bringing together 7 conservative-leaning (Red) citizens and 7 liberal-leaning (Blue) citizens for a 3-hr structured conversation. Make your voice heard and listen to others —all in a respectful environment. Independents are welcome to participate - we ask for the workshop discussion that you register are leaning Red or Blue.
Goals: - Understand the experiences & beliefs of those on the other side. - Find any areas of common ground in addition to our differences.- See if we can learn anything that might be helpful to our nation.
Who should attend? Anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of people whose political beliefs differ from their own. You should be able to answer "yes" to the following question: “Are you willing to listen to the other side, and speak with respect?”
Logistics: Two ways to join a Better Angels' Red/Blue Workshop are as a Participant or as an Observer /Alternate.
Participants engage in small- and large-group discussions with individuals of both the same and different political persuasions. Participants must identify as “red” (Republican / leaning conservative) or “blue” (Democrat / leaning liberal). There is an equal balance of red and blue participants: 5 to 7 people on each side.
Observers / Alternates identify as red, blue or independent (not leaning either way). They do not participate in the discussions but will have the opportunity to watch and listen throughout the day. They join the participants for conversations during lunch and break times. Observers/Alternates should be ready to step in and participate as their "political color" in the event of a participant cancellation. Observer/Alternates have found observing a workshop to be very valuable.
Participants & Observers will receive a call and email from a local Better Angels Organizer in Dayton. Organizers may need to switch people between Participant and Observer / Alternate depending on the # of participants needed to balance the workshop. The location of the event and times will also be confirmed in an email acknowledging your registration for this event.
