Maine is facing an unprecedented shortage of homes, across all regions and income levels, which is impacting quality of life for all Mainers. Businesses are closing due to staffing shortages; essential workers can’t live in the towns they serve; seniors can’t downsize; and Maine cannot replenish its aging workforce because young families can’t find housing. The state needs to add 80,000 units by 2030 to meet future needs.
Led by respected member organizations including the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, Maine Affordable Housing Coalition and the Maine State Real Estate & Development Association, Build Homes, Build Community will serve as a statewide advocate for pro-housing policy, educate Mainers on how to support housing in their communities, and amplify awareness on the impact of the housing crisis. The goals are to raise support for housing, reduce barriers to production, and encourage municipalities to guide development in their own communities.
BHBC is non-partisan and research-driven, and supports:
- Increasing access to homes of all kinds so that those who want to live and work in Maine, can
- Reducing barriers to housing production to strengthen Maine’s economy
- Growing the construction and trades workforce
- Increasing affordability so that Maine teachers, firefighters, EMTs, police officers, nurses and other essential workers can live in or near the communities they serve
- Building and empowering a pro housing voice at all levels of decision making in Maine
