Description

***THIS SESSION IS OPEN TO ALL ATTENDEES***

BOARDS WITH BRAINS is SVP’s board governance education series (learn more, below). Join us for our 2015 trainings, like this one: Board service can be exciting and also daunting. Learn the basics of the Colorado nonprofit sector, board roles and legal duties, and how to bring your talents to the table and help create a great nonprofit board.

About this Session:

Board service can be exciting and also daunting, yet many of us receive little to no training in what it means to be a board member…much less a good one! In this session on the basics of board service, we’ll share an overview of nonprofits in Colorado and consider what it means to be a part of this incredible sector. Next, we will discuss the legal duties and roles and responsibilities shared by nonprofit board and their board members, as well as discuss what makes a great board member. We’ll wrap up with some tools to help you best deploy your talents, skills and energy on your first, current or next nonprofit board of directors. Session objectives include:

  • Gaining a broad understanding of the scope of the nonprofit sector in Colorado
  • Increasing knowledge of board legal duties, roles and responsibilities among prospective and current board members

About our Presenter:

Caryn is co-founder/principal of interSector Partners, L3C, the country’s 39th L3C. She holds a master of nonprofit management from Regis University, is a co-founder of the Colorado Nonprofit Social Enterprise Exchange, co-founder/director of Impact Hub Boulder, and is past-chair of Social Venture Partners Boulder County. Caryn’s 25 years of experience has focused on board governance, organizational development, fundraising, strategic and business planning, social enterprise and earned income strategies and building cross-sector partnerships.

Caryn’s approach focuses on meeting individuals and organizations where they are and honoring their past while simultaneously challenging them toward strategic and sustainable futures. Her experience includes: director of women’s services at the YWCA of Greater Lansing; owner of grantwriting firm, Your Write Hand; ED of the Boulder Parks and Recreation Foundation (now PLAY Boulder); director of planning services and social enterprise at JVA Consulting; and community liaison positions with the city of Boulder.

About the BOARDS WITH BRAINS series:

SVP Boulder County is invested in strengthening our shared community's social sector. We want to help make our nonprofits and the people who run them wildly successful, and, we believe strong leaders – both staff and board – help create capable organizations.

With that in mind, we've designed our BOARDS WITH BRAINS professional development series. We've got recurring sessions covering governance fundamentals (a nice refresher, or first-timer introduction), as well as sessions digging into leadership topics (deep-dives into specific areas of governance best practice).

And, to make it easy for as many Boulder County leaders to sign up, sessions are priced accessibly. Our per-session fee is a below-market $30, and each session includes a limited number of scholarship slots. Additionally, we offer a transferable, 8-punch passes (resulting in a 20% discount, just $24/session!).

We do hope you’ll join us – sign up now, and, if you need assistance purchasing a series punch pass, or details on scholarships, get in touch by emailing Olga now
