Honoring artistic growth, queer liberatory practices, and safety in process, this hands-on survival guide-making session invites attendees to create their own mixed media handbooks to prepare for, respond to, and recover from times of crisis.
Melding a curated selection of exhibition books, museum archival materials, and other printed matter, we embrace shared learnings and radical softness, and using SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR QUEER BLACK YOUTH by Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art Fellowship alum Heather Lynn Johnson as a key point of departure, we ask: How do we invite ourselves to continue our creative pursuit in the face of urgency?
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own materials or printed elements for incorporating into their survival guides– but we’ll have everything you need here, including a photocopier, drawing materials, and textured objects! Attendees do not need any prior experience to take part. Space is limited– please RSVP with intention.
This program takes its cue from Soft Spaces, on view Sep 11, 2025 - Jan 18, 2026, curated by Chloe Ming, Assistant Curator / Exhibitions Manager, and is facilitated by Aleyana Mitchell and Jo Norris-Gaither, Visitor Experience Associates and multimedia artists.
