About this event
Join us at the Drama Book Shop for an exclusive in-person conversation with acclaimed artists Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire as they explore the new musical, Kimberly Akimbo, a recipient of 8 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. This special event will take place on Tuesday, May 30th at 7:30 pm.
Set in New Jersey in 1999, Kimberly Akimbo follows the story of sixteen-year-old Kimberly, who faces the challenges of a rare disease that causes her to age rapidly. Amidst a dysfunctional family and potential legal troubles, Kimberly also experiences her first teenage crush. Determined to find joy against all odds, she embarks on an extraordinary adventure.
Jeanine Tesori is a highly versatile composer known for her work in Broadway, opera, film, and television. She is celebrated as one of the first female composers commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera, alongside Missy Mazzoli. Tesori's impressive repertoire includes award-winning musicals such as Fun Home (Tony Award, Pulitzer finalist), Soft Power (Pulitzer finalist), Caroline, or Change (Olivier Award), Violet, Shrek, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Twelfth Night. She has also composed operas like Blue, A Blizzard on Marblehead Neck, and The Lion, The Unicorn and Me, and recently served as the Supervising Vocal Producer for Steven Spielberg's West Side Story.
David Lindsay-Abaire, the mastermind behind Kimberly Akimbo, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, screenwriter, lyricist, and librettist. His play Good People earned critical acclaim on Broadway and received prestigious accolades such as the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, The Horton Foote Prize, The Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award, and two Tony nominations. Lindsay-Abaire's previous play, Rabbit Hole, was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, five Tony nominations, and the Spirit of America Award. He also wrote the book and lyrics for Shrek the Musical (with music by Jeanine Tesori), which garnered eight Tony nominations, four Oliviers, a Grammy nomination, and earned him the Kleban Prize as America's most promising musical theatre lyricist. His other notable works include Ripcord, Fuddy Meers, Wonder of the World, and A Devil Inside. In addition to his achievements in theater, Lindsay-Abaire has made significant contributions to the screen, including his film adaptation of Rabbit Hole (starring Nicole Kidman, earning an Oscar nomination), Dreamworks' Rise of the Guardians, and The Family Fang.
