Cultural Survival Endangered Languages Program
Cultural Survival is a global leader in the protection of Indigenous Peoples' lands, languages, and cultures. Along with local partners, we advocate for Indigenous communities whose lands, livelihoods, and ways of life are under threat from unscrupulous government or corporate interests. We also empower Indigenous Peoples to represent themselves before intergovernmental and other international institutions; to promote their values within their communities; and to restore and retain their languages and cultural traditions. Our award-winning magazine, the Cultural Survival Quarterly, has been published for more than 30 years, and the full archive is available on our website: www.cs.org.
Endangered Languages Program:One of our central programs is the Endangered Languages Program because 70 of the remaining 139 Native American languages will disappear in the next 5 years unless action is taken right now to teach them to younger tribal citizens. Hundreds of Native American communities are in immediate need of additional funding, political support, and training to make their language revitalization programs work. We work on all three fronts.
All of Cultural Survival's work is based on the principles set forth in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
