ZOOM: Play-based assessment-making data meaningful

For young children, play is the language of learning. For teachers, data is the language of learning, but does data have to look like paper and pencil observations all the time?. Children show what they can do in play-based learning. Formal observations are great, however, there is so much more we can see when kids play, to get a more accurate view of their growth. As teachers we can be systematic in using play as a medium for applying the learning cycle-what do kids need to learn? How do we support them? How do we know if they’ve learned it? What do we do if they need more support?
