About this event

Arts • Craft

Zines are self-published books that take many forms. In this workshop, we will be covering the basics of one-page zines using collage, writing, and drawing. Using a black and white copy machine, you will take home copies of your handmade zine printed on multi-colored paper.

Self-publishing is a fun way to express yourself and make accessible art. This workshop will be a great opportunity to make what ever is on your mind- whether it be design-oriented, political, personal, or just plain silly.

Taught by Gaby Hurtado-Ramos

Gaby Hurtado-Ramos is an artist and educator making drawings, prints, zines, and multimedia work around the cracks and glimmers in queer social spaces. Freeze frames of people dancing, scenes from a party, and decorative streamers make up their assemblage approach through photography, screenprint, drawing, zines, and mixed media. They are originally from Houston, Texas, received their BA from Oberlin College (2016) and their MFA from the University of Tennessee (2025) with a concentration in printmaking. They have taught workshops nationwide including at The Women’s Studio Workshop (Rosendale, NY), Relay Ridge (Knoxville, TN), and for the Tennessee Art Education Association. Gaby’s work has been shared and exhibited in print and zine expos, markets, academic archives, and galleries. They have completed residencies at Penland School of Craft (North Carolina), The Printing Museum (Houston, TX), Dirt Palace (Providence, RI), and The Wedding Cake House (Providence, RI). As a resident at The Printing Museum they published a zine documenting lesbian bar history in Houston. Their illustration work has been commissioned by ProPublica, the Highlander Research and Education Center, and the Tucson Jewish Museum. Gaby currently works in Houston and teaches as a consultant at the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
