Yoga for Mental Health Wellness

Yoga is an evidence-based practice that has numerous benefits for trauma survivors and those wanting to improve their mental health and wellness including regulation of the autonomic nervous system, improved interoception (body awareness), reduction of PTSD, anxiety and depression, enhanced mood and emotional regulation, and improved sleep and mindfulness. In this trauma informed workshop we will create a healing space where we prioritize safety, empowerment and agency and invite participants to choose how they engage with their practice. We will learn pranayam (breath work), meditation, and asana (poses) that will help to create healing in our bodies and minds.

Workshop Host: Jamie Bailey

My objective is to share my Yoga practice within a community of individuals whose vision and mission aligns with the values of healing and a holistic approach to wellness attending to the needs of the bodies, minds, and spirts of all people. I have been a practitioner of Yoga for over 20 years. Twelve years ago, I became a certified Yoga teacher completing a 200-hour yoga certification. Since then I have taught at several studios as well as for private clients. I have taken extensive workshops in order to attain more knowledge in areas such as meditation, energy healing, anatomy, alignment, adjustments and ethics. I teach Yoga and meditation at a residential recovery center for men and women recovering from addiction and other co-occurring mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety. I have taught the meditation portion of a 200-hour Yoga teacher training. I have a master's degree in mental health counseling and it is my hope to become a therapist who implements Yoga as a treatment approach to assist people on their journey to healing. I am a Reiki practitioner and took my Zen Buddhist vows in 2013. Currently I am a Yoga Instructor at UTEP’s Recreational Sports Department.
