Our new summer series of lectures is here! Short and to the point and with time for Q&A to answer all your questions, Writespace Lectures are bite-size learning opportunities meant to be accesible to all and introduce the instructors of Writespace Writing Center workshops to all.

All about Autofiction! With the success of authors like Karl Ove Knausgaard and Ocean Vuong, autofiction has leapt off the tongues of critics and readers alike in the past decade. But what is it? This new genre has presedents leading back to Truman Capote and Marcel Proust but has gained a new meaning with confessional and heart-wrenching stories popularized in the 21st century. Join professor Rebecca Spears for an introduction to autofiction, featuring ways to see your memoir and fictional work in a new light!

Rebecca A. Spears, author of Brook the Divide: Poems (Unsolicited Press, 2020) and The Bright Obvious: Poems (Finishing Line Press, 2009), has her poems, essays, and reviews included in TriQuarterly, Calyx, Crazyhorse, Barrow Street, Verse Daily, Ars Medica, Field Notes, and other journals and anthologies. She has received awards from the Taos Writers Workshop, Vermont Studio Center, and Dairy Hollow House. Brook the Divide was shortlisted for Best First Book of Poetry (Texas Institute of Letters). Spears is also a Pushcart nominee.

Writespace is Houston's writing center. Founded in April of 2014, we are a grassroots literary arts organization founded by writers, for writers. At Writespace, we support writers of all genres, including writers of literary fiction, poetry, science-fiction, fantasy, mystery, young adult, and other genres. Through our weekly writing workshops led by some of Houston's finest writing teachers, we seek to give writers who can't afford to earn an MFA in Creative Writing the same high-quality training and mentorship opportunities available through MFA programs.
