About this event

Richard Antoine White will be in conversation with Judith Krummeck about his life, work, and new book, I'm Possible: A Story of Survival, a Tuba, and the Small Miracle of a Big Dream.

Richard Antoine White, the first African-American to ever earn a doctorate in music for tuba performance, for an event in support of his memoir I'M POSSIBLE: A Story of Survival, a Tuba, and the Small Miracle of a Big Dream. Soon, he will become the first ever Black tenured professor of tuba performance, a job that has 15 positions in the entire country. This accomplishment and part of his story is also chronicles in a mini documentary about Richard's life, produced by Early Light media, which is streaming on Discovery's Magnolia +.

Both an "evocative portrait of ambition and artistic aspiration" and a "vivid, inspiring saga of talent sprouting in unlikely places'', I'M POSSIBLE chronicles White's rise from the streets of Baltimore's most impoverished neighborhood to the halls of the New Mexico Philharmonic. It is both a reckoning and a recording of his miraculous musical journey, one faced with adversity at every turn: from homlessness to racism in a field that had never seen anyone like him before.

Judith Krummeck is the evening drive time host for Maryland’s classical music station, WBJC, and she is the author of two books. "Beyond the Baobab" is a collection of essays about her immigrant experience. Her biographical memoir, "Old New Worlds," was a finalist for the 2020 Next Generation Indie Book Awards and the National Indie Excellence Awards. She is working on her first novel, and one of her screenplays is currently in development in Cape Town.

ASL interpretation will be available for attendees.

Writers LIVE programs are supported in part by a bequest from The Miss Howard Hubbard Adult Programming Fund.
