More about Thu: Thu Anh Nguyen is a Vietnamese Floridian whose work as a poet, painter, and educator tells her immigration story. Her poetry has been featured in journals such as the Southern Humanities Review, the Crab Orchard Review, and the Cider Press Review. Her poem “Symbols Are Not Excuses” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize by the Southern Humanities Review.

In her social practice art, Thu shapes poetry while listening to conversations about what makes a flourishing community. Thu also paints large-scale watercolors and murals, and is obsessed with flowers, their symbolism and beauty.

As an immigrant, the mastery of language was the key to my sense of belonging, and I also know that language isn’t easily accessible to everyone. I use art in addition to my words because art allows people to tell stories in ways that maybe words fail them. Most importantly, art is just fun! I use art to incorporate a sense of play and freedom, and to open the mind to more possibilities and inspiration. Sometimes we will look at art and our observations and questions will lead us to writing ekphrastic poems. Sometimes we will draw or paint our own art and see how that leads us to language. The poetry I love most are verbal paintings, and I hope to nurture an appreciation for imagery through playing with art and writing.

Write Now: Generative Creative Writing Sessions are held every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning for writers of all genres and levels. Drop in for a boost of inspiration, or come every week to build a consistent writing practice.
