Worm Your Way Into Composting
Join us at Heritage Presbyterian Church for a hands-on workshop on composting with worms! Learn how to turn your food scraps into nutrient-rich soil for your garden. Our expert instructors will guide you through the process step by step. Don't miss this opportunity to reduce waste and create a sustainable environment right in your backyard!
Worm composting, also known as vermicomposting, is a simple way to reduce household garbage. By layering your food scraps with dry materials like scrap paper and cardboard and adding the magic ingredient – worms – you can convert it into compost. This 2-part class is all about composting with Red Wiggler Worms.
This Oct. 29 class, held in Heritage Presbyterian Church's Heritage Hall, will cover:
- Benefits of worm composting and soil health
- Types of worm bins
- What to feed the worms?
- Setting up a worm bin
- Worm anatomy/diet
- Worm castings
- Applying worm castings
- Where to source worms?
Attendees will receive free worm castings to take home for your garden!
*****Then, as an added bonus, class participants can return at 3 pm Nov. 1 for Steve to show you hands-on how to apply worm castings at Swenson Garden at Heritage Presbyterian Church (right outside of where the Oct. 29 class is being held).
Instructor Steve Hahn-Smith has been home gardening and landscaping for decades and is a graduate of the Permaculture Design Certificate course sponsored by Sustainable Solano in Benicia. Sparked by an interest in the pivotal role of soils in our gardens and farming, he enrolled in and completed the Soil Food Web (SFW) Foundational Courses, workshopped in Costa Rica with the SFW, and is currently enrolled in the Consultant Training Program, focused on the role of soil microbiology in healthy soils. He is currently engaged in worm breeding and continuous flow systems for high quality, biologically rich worm castings (aka worm poop), one of the best additions available for enhancing life in your soil.
*$10 suggested donation will be collected during the class. Nobody will be turned away due to lack of funds. Email nicole@sustainablesolano.org if you need to request a scholarship.
