Workshop | Your Values, Your Career

Feeling unsure about career options beyond academia? You’re not alone—but a tenure-track job isn’t the only path that aligns with your values. Your Values, Your Career: A Grad Student’s Guide to Diverse Career Paths helps you break down common myths about non-academic jobs, define success for yourself, and explore career options with confidence. This standalone workshop is the first in our three-part series.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this workshop intended for?

This workshop is for grad students who have no idea what they want to do post-graduation. Even if you are pretty sure you want to stay in academia, you might be curious about a pivot to industry. If you find yourself saying, “I don’t know what I want after my PhD," then this workshop is for you.

Who is this workshop NOT intended for?

If you are a grad student who has already made a clear decision about the direction you would like to take your career, and you have identified job titles aligned with your values that you are excited to pursue, then this workshop is probably not for you. But check out later workshops in the series!

I am a postdoc or recent grad and this workshop seems to be a perfect fit. Can I still attend?

We won't exclude anyone wishing to attend our online workshops, but please know that the workshop is designed for graduate students who have not yet graduated. Not all information might be relevant to your circumstances.

Who is moderating the workshop?

The workshop will be run by Next Draft LLC: Gabrielle Filip-Crawford (PhD, Social Psychology), Jessica Shropshire (PhD, Social Psychology), and Christina Spiker (PhD, Visual Studies). For our longer bios, please visit our main website! www.nextdraftllc.com.

How is the workshop run?

The workshop is a blend of explanation, guided activities, and discussion on Zoom. We will provide digital materials for the guided activities in advance! We have planned for 1 hour and 30 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A. There is a limit of 30 participants. The workshop will not be recorded.

I am interested in attending, but I don't have the financial means.

We encourage all grad students attending to apply for professional development money through their university. This could be through your school, department, or bodies like the grad student senate. Still out of luck? Get in touch with us. If we have any sponsorships, we might be able to help.
