Stephan has been thinking about and working on increasing the modularizability of Ruby and Rails codebase since 2010. He proposed component-based Rails applications in 2013. When joining Gusto in 2020 the topic again became directly relevant to his day job as he is now working on foundation engineering that aims to give product engineers en ever more productive system to work in.
