Event description

Description

The best way to improve your R and tidyverse skills is to practice exploring real data. Here's a chance to do that with an expert!

This is a one-day interactive workshop in NYC where we'll code together as a small group. We'll see how to analyze a dataset from start to finish in R, gaining experience with core tidyverse packages like ggplot2 and dplyr as well as others like tidyr, forcats, tidytext, broom, and widyr.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

About the Instructor:

I'm David Robinson (@drob), I've worked as a data scientist at Stack Overflow and DataCamp, and I'm the author of the books Text Mining with R (with Julia Silge) and Introduction to Empirical Bayes. I created several open source R packages, such as broom, fuzzyjoin, and widyr, several of which will appear in the workshop.

I have a passion for walking people through an exploratory data analysis from start to finish. You can see examples in more than forty screencasts on my YouTube channel, in which I analyze datasets that I've never seen before. I write a lot about data analysis and programming on my blog, Variance Explained, and more than 50,000 people have learned data science from my online course Introduction to the Tidyverse.

I think R and the tidyverse are amazing and powerful tools, and I love to share them with others.

FAQs

What can I expect from this workshop?

For a full day (including an hour for lunch and several breaks), we'll go through a start-to-finish analysis of a real dataset, specifically on the history of United Nations voting. I'll share the analysis on a screen as you follow along on your own computer. If you'd like to see examples of data analyses, you could watch one of my screencasts, such as this one where I predict wine ratings based on reviews.

This will be a highly interactive session in a small group (no more than 15 attendees). We'll decide what directions to explore based on the group's opinion, and you'll always be able to ask questions or get help.

This is the fifth time I've used this data to teach a full-day R workshop, and I've found it rewarding every time!

What experience should I already have in R?

This is not an introductory course. To get the most out of the workshop, you should have some familiarity with R and the tidyverse, especially with the dplyr and ggplot2 packages. (These concepts will be re-introduced in case you're rusty!)

What can I expect to learn?

Besides dplyr and ggplot2, you'll work through examples of the following packages:

  • tidyr for reshaping data
  • forcats for working with categorical data
  • tidytext for processing natural language data
  • broom for using model objects in the tidyverse
  • widyr for finding correlations and distances among tidy data
  • ggraph for visualizing networks

Most importantly, you'll build experience applying each of these methods as part of the flow of a data analysis, and see how they combine together to draw insights out of data.

How should I prepare for the session?

This is a code-along workshop, so be sure to bring your laptop and charger. Make sure you have the following installed:

What's the refund policy?

You can get a full refund up to 7 days in advance of the session (space is limited, and this ensures we have time to find a replacement if you cancel).

Is my ticket transferable?

Yes! Eventbrite will allow you to transfer your ticket to someone else (even up to the day before).
