Workshop: Altering the Image - Cut, Layer, Redraw

Learn how to alter imagery and create new ones in this hands-on workshop led by artist Kara Mshinda. Work with found photos and images using simple techniques like cutting, layering, and drawing to create fresh stories and perspectives.
All levels welcome—embrace the process of amending and altering and learning new ways of seeing.
Workshop Overview:
This 2-hour hands-on workshop guides participants through the process of transforming photographs into new narratives. You'll learn techniques for physical and visual intervention that reveal hidden stories within familiar images.
What You'll Learn:
- How to select and prepare images for alteration
- Cutting and collage techniques for deconstructing photographs
- Drawing interventions on photographic surfaces
- Layering multiple images to create new meanings
- Working with found imagery and personal photographs
- Embracing "happy accidents" in the creative process

Each participant will complete 1-2 altered image pieces to take home. These can be jumping-off points for future work or finished pieces in their own right.
Materials Provided:
- Assorted found photographs and magazine images
- Drawing materials (ink, pens, markers)
- Cutting tools (scissors, craft knives, cutting mats)
- Adhesives and mounting materials
- Paper and backing materials
What to Bring:
Your own photographs (optional but encouraged) - Bring 2-3 images you'd like to work with (prints, not digital files)
- An open mind and willingness to experiment
- A folder or portfolio to transport your finished work home

This workshop is designed for all skill levels. Whether you're an experienced artist looking to explore new techniques or a complete beginner curious about altered images, you're welcome here. No previous art experience necessary.
