Working With Clients Around Career Stress in the New Climate: Preparing Clients for the Gut-Punch of a Shifting Culture, Layoffs, Career Transitions and Opportunities

Given the uncertainty of the job situation in Washington, D.C. and the federal government -– which comprises a large number of our client base -– due to the policies proposed by the new administration, Lisa Kays PLLC, and Judith Klavans, Ph.D. invite you to this workshop focused on the emotional, pragmatic and financial factors related to a climate of job uncertainty. Such a climate impacts different individuals in a variety of ways depending on a number of factors–some may be grief-stricken and numb due to the potential loss of a meaningful career, some may view it as a welcome opportunity for change and transition, and others may be extremely stressed due to financial implications. Join us to learn more about the potential emotional and psychological impacts of this new job environment on our clients, as well as to hear pragmatically from a long-term career counselor with experience in the private sector and federal government, what clients may expect, how to protect themselves, and how we can best support them.

Learning Objectives

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify three likely stress responses to job uncertainty and unknowns.
Identify three ways to help clients accept and respond to the changing work climate.
Clarify two ways for clients to address their anxiety and grief around decision-making.

This course is appropriate for social workers, SLPs, OTs, counselors, psychiatrists, and any mental health profession in contact with parents, at the following levels of practice: beginning, intermediate and advanced.

Because the workshop is highly participatory and draws heavily on clinician questions and scenarios, it is applicable to a wide-range of professionals at varying levels of experience. Indeed, professionals will walk away with different take-aways depending in their level/experience in practice, as outlined below:

Beginner: Beginning social workers will have an opportunity to explore how job uncertainty and loss can and does impact their practice, and to start to develop their own values and approaches—based on and informed by a seasoned career coach and a seasoned therapist.

Intermediate and Advanced: Intermediate level social workers who may have developed a more cohesive professional identity and values will be able to explore how job uncertainty and loss may impact clients, and to explore how these impacts may be magnified when the issue is multiplied over many people in a system. They may explore and benefit more from discussion of strategies for managing clinical scenarios related to job loss and uncertainty. In addition, they will have an opportunity to reflect on and review practices they have been engaging in and to assess their appropriateness in light of new learning, research and realities that are more current.

The course will be co-led by Lisa Kays, LICSW, LCSW-C, LCSW and Dr. Judith Klavans.

Lisa Kays, LICSW, LCSW-C, LCSW is a social worker and psychotherapist in Washington, D.C. She has been providing individual, couples and group therapy to adults in private practice since 2013, and previously provided care to folks struggling with addiction in a prison setting and in outpatient rehabs. Her work specializes in relationships and life transitions, including the relationship we have to work as well as with ourselves.

Judith Klavans is a senior-level career advisor who works collaboratively with the therapists of her clients, and requires her clients to be in therapy.. She has brought her own career experience in industry, academia, and government to her practice as a career counselor. Judith uses a psychodynamic approach to her practice; she has supported her clients in many diverse fields including medicine, law, finance, law enforcement, education, non-for-profit, grant writing, video-gaming, software engineering, art, carpentry, automobile mechanics, chemistry and more.
