Description
Working Lands: Managing flooding, drought and wildfires
The recent events in Santa Barbara County may become the new normal. Droughts, fires and floods can wreak havoc on agricultural production and the economics of agriculture. Please join the Cachuma Resource Conservation District on April 12 for a workshop where we will discuss:
- How the soil sponge provides resilience to flooding, drought, and wildfires
- Strategies for increasing and capturing rainfall
- Economic benefits of regenerating the soil sponge
Our workshop will feature Walter Jehne and Didi Pershouse. Walter Jehne, former CSIRO Climate Scientist and Microbiologist, founder of Healthy Soils Australia, and Didi Pershouse, author of The Ecology of Care and partner in the Soil Carbon Coalition. This 1-day workshop will also include regenerating and rehydrating the soil sponge: the soil's capacity to hold and store water through the accumulation of organic material.
To keep this event free we ask that you bring your own lunch (or grab some food next door at Trader Joes).
This workshop will be hosted at the CRCD office/NRCS Santa Maria Service Center, 920 East Stowell Rd, Santa Maria, CA
*Please RSVP by April 9th, 2018. Space is extremely limited. If you're late, send us an email at aolsen@rcdsantabarbara.org. Thank you!
