Woodland Management for Conservation
Overview
Join Tir Coed’s immersive two-day Woodland Management for Conservation course and gain the knowledge and confidence to manage woodlands sustainably and for biodiversity.
Day 1 – Knowing What We Have:
Learn how to assess and survey a woodland, identify key species, understand habitat types and soil and create a vision for your own woodland. Through (outdoor) classroom sessions and guided fieldwork, you’ll explore how ecological theory translates into the living woodland around you.
Day 2 – Improving Our Woods for Wildlife:
Build on your survey to explore practical management methods that benefit wildlife, from coppicing, glade creation and deadwood management to understanding pests, diseases and natural regeneration. Learn how to plan for long-term ecological health and discover funding sources to support your vision.
By the end of the course, you’ll know how to:
- Assess the health and biodiversity of woodlands.
- Develop a management plan that supports both people and nature.
- Apply practical techniques to improve habitats for birds, mammals, insects and plants.
Perfect for landowners, volunteers and anyone passionate about woodland conservation, this course blends expert-led learning with real-world experience in the woods.
The course days will run 10am - 4pm. The venue is outdoors with covered spaces. Refreshments will be provided (please bring your own lunch).
