Overview

Led by CIAT Scotland East & Women in Architectural Technology, hosted as part of Fife College Green Skills & Retrofit Event 2025

Women and Retrofit: Perspectives, Experiences, and Pathways Forward
This session explores women’s experiences of retrofit—from those working professionally in the field to those living through retrofit in their own homes. Bringing together voices from across practice, research, and lived experience, we’ll discuss how perceptions of home, family life, and care intersect with retrofit decision-making and delivery. The discussion will address gender prevalence and representation in the construction and retrofit sectors, highlighting both barriers and practical solutions. Through the lens of women’s perspectives, the session will focus on trust, empathy, and health promotion—emphasising the importance of understanding one’s own situation and priorities within the retrofit process.Participants will gain insights into how gendered experiences shape engagement, communication, and outcomes, and how inclusive approaches can lead to more effective, equitable, and caring retrofit practices.

Speakers will include:

Natasha Houchin – conservation architect, Director of SEDA and Lead Consultant at Carbon Futures.

Sharon Bhorkar – PhD researcher at Leeds Bekett University, focusing on effectiveness of evaluating retrofit measures and occupant experience

Janice Foster – Chartered engineer and building performance researcher at MEARU GSA

Wendy E. Ball - educator and social researcher, focusing on the public discourse and creating common ground through her project called Encouraged Conversation – Encouraged Conversations – Bridging the divide, one conversation at a time

Come connect, share ideas, and be part of shaping a more inclusive future for retrofit.
