Thurs January 9, 2020 (12pm-7pm): Industry Day presented by APEGS

Join us for an afternoon of technical talks and industry fair! Ticket includes luncheon and industry fair drink ticket.

Fri January 10, 2020 (9 am - TBD): Short courses *students only*

Ticket Includes short course presentations and lunch. You are also invited to stay for the CSEG Challenge Bowl from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm to cheer on USask participants!

Two options for courses. You will be contacted after purchase to inquire about which one you are purchasing to be placed in:

1. Mesoscopic Alteration Interpretation – presented by Dave Thomas

This workshop will focus on understanding the physiochemical processes leading to alteration, veining and mineralization at a mesoscopic scale and how to interpret crosscutting relationships between alteration events. This workshop is not focused on geochemical data and data processing approaches but emphasizes how to understand alteration processes through observation of the critical alteration textures and fabrics and their temporal relationships.

2. Wireline Interpretation – presented by Tabetha Stirrett

This course will cover the main geophysical wireline tools describing high level theory and interpretation. A few of the more specialized tools will also be covered. Students will have the opportunity to look at logs, understand how to read the scales and to pick formation tops at many points throughout the course.

Join us for an evening to celebrate the end of WIUGC 2020. The evening consists of a cocktail hour, banquet meal, keynote speaker (Tim Prokopiuk), and presentation of awards, prizes, and announcing the recipients of the 57th Annual WIUGC 2021! Semi-formal/cocktail event.

Tim Prokopiuk graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2000 with a BSc (High Hon.) in Geological Sciences. Tim has spent the last 20 years at his alma mater, working in the Saskatchewan Isotope Laboratory from 1999 to 2009, then into his current position as a Senior Lab Instructor and Advisor in 2009. He specializes in teaching senior hard rock labs and advises the student body on their academic careers and beyond. Tim is a vital member of the USask Geological Sciences department, offering his expertise, guidance and support, and a mentor to talk to any day about anything.

Tim will discuss career advice to help you succeed beyond what is frequently taught and earn respect in whichever path you pursue. However, what is most valuable is Tim’s platform on encouraging positive mental health for individuals, in academia, or the workplace. It is time that we all participate in an open discussion on mental health, and what we can do to support others and ourselves. Geoscientists can often be subjected to inclement conditions (e.g. fieldwork and isolation, contracts away from home), making it especially important to be aware of our mental health and how to maintain positive health under these conditions.
