Winter Solstice Community Gathering + Hikes
Overview
Celebrate the Winter Solstice and the ancient traditions of Yule as we embrace the shortest day and longest night of the year with mindfulness.
This gathering will invite you to connect with nature, the turning of the seasons, and the spirit of renewal. Along the way, we’ll pause to appreciate our neighbors, community, and the ways we mutually support one another. This family-friendly event is a moment to honor the season, set intentions, and welcome the light’s return
The Leo Bouchard Conservation Center (5 Waterview Drive, Smithfield, RI 02917) will be open to the public the shortest day of the year, Sunday, December 21, from 10:00 AM-1:00PM. We'll be gathering in the cozy indoor space for winter-solstice themed crafts and reflection, and to enjoy hot cider and snacks. While you're there, check out our curated environmental education displays and activities! Two guided hikes will depart from the center at 10:30 AM and 12:00 PM respectively for short, 30-45 minute loops in the Wolf Hill Preserve. This event is drop-in friendly. There will be drinks, snacks, and crafts in the indoor Leo Bouchard Conservation Center throughout the whole event, 10 AM-1PM.
Accessibility and Parking
There is limited parking available at the Leo Bouchard Center, and some of these are handicap spots. If you are able, we encourage visitors to park along the lefthand side of Waterview Drive to leave space open by the Center for staff and folks with mobility concerns. The Leo Bouchard Center has a single-occupant restroom and potable water. Let us know if you have any accessibility needs or questions.
