A winemaker weekend at CBC kicks off with Friday’s visit from Chris Boustred to share his wines from Remhoogte in Stellenbosch. From crisp/easy to rich/full, both Chris’s Chenin Blancs and silky reds are going to capture your attention and find a home at your table again and again.
Plus, his story is terrific! Chris’s great-grandfather arrived in South Africa in the 19th Century and had a bit of success as a diamond miner. The 3,000 carat “Cullinan” diamond in the British Crown Jewels? Thomas Cullinan was that Cullinan.
Chris's parents, Murray and Juliet Boustred, purchased the estate in 1994 and immediately committed to sustainability in farming and in preserving the native flora and fauna surrounding the estate. Chris has continued and extended that commitment and pulled more and more complexity and freshness out of his now old-vine plantings. As you’ll taste for yourself as he shares:
Remhoogte Chenin Blanc First Light 2024 - Crazy value for an "entry level" Chenin from 30-50 year-old vines in a cool site on granite.
Remhoogte Chenin Blanc Honeybunch 2024 - One of our favorite South African Chenins comes from 35 year-old vines in a prime, single, vineyard. Rich as always with even better acidity than usual.
Remhoogte Chronicle Cape Estate Blend 2021 - A taste of all the estate's prime red grapes in one bold blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Merlot, Pinotage and Syrah. Juicy, ripe, fun.
Remhoogte Pinotage Vantage 2021 - South Africa's most distinctive grape, this Cinsault/Pinot Noir crossing has plenty of savory notes, here matched by boisterous primary fruit. Fire up the grill!
Remhoogte Red Blend Sir Thomas Cullinan 2019 - Named in honor of winemaker Chris Boustred's great grandfather, this is a lovely ripe and savory Bordeaux blend that finishes long and firm.
We’ll have some treats from the cheese case out to enjoy with the wines and terrific sale bottle and mix/match six-pack prices in effect during the tasting. Come take a quick trip to South Africa with us Friday from 3 to 7 and get to know Chris and Remhoogte.
