Wine Class - Terroir Focus - Volcanic Soil
Overview
Terroir - this French word is for the idea that wine should express a sense of where it was grown. Perhaps the closest English translation is “placefulness.” It encompasses all the characteristics of vineyards - climate, soil, elevation, orientation - each of which can have a surprising impact on the final wine. In our Terroir Focus classes, we want to shine the spotlight on a specific aspect of terroir and see how it expresses itself in wines from around the world.
In this Terroir class, Anita Bender will explore wines made in vineyards with volcanic soils. Whether near an active volcano like the wines grown on the slopes of Mount Etna or near old, decomposed igneous rocks like the Willamette Valley, these regions boast unique soil types that translate into unique wines. Wherever they are found, volcanic soils tend to lead to dramatic and powerful wines that match the dramatic and powerful landscapes these vineyards occupy. Come taste the raw power of the earth as we explore wines from volcanic soils.
