Project Description:

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and make an impact on the restoration of Rocky Mountain National Park’s beautiful ecosystems! The Kawuneeche Valley Restoration Collaborative and the RMNP Vegetation Program have worked for many years to plant riparian shrub saplings into areas of the Kawuneeche Valley that have been impacted by altered hydrology, browsing pressure from ungulates, and wildfire. Our goals include restoring riparian shrub populations to their historical vigor to support beaver habitat and facilitate improved hydrology. Work alongside dedicated staff and fellow volunteers to help plant up to 500+ willow, and alder into nearly an acre of wet meadow habitat. Participants should be prepared for a rewarding experience featuring high physical exertion, teamwork, and possible moose sitings. If you're ready to roll up your sleeves and embrace the challenge, join us to help these baby willows thrive!

What to Expect:

Volunteers will be planting native shrub saplings within a wet meadow site in exposed conditions (full sun, rain, wind). Planting will involve moving trays of saplings (40lbs per tray), kneeling, digging with hand tools in dense and wet soil, and attention to careful planting techniques. This project is physically demanding and will be a great fit for hardy and energetic folks.

Minimum age: 18 years

Time: 8:00am - 3:00pm

Parking/meeting location: Timber Lake Trailhead parking lot, we will be shuttling volunteers to the worksite in order to minimize vehicles in limited parking areas

Work site: Beaver Creek

Nearest bathroom: The closest bathroom to the worksite is located at Beaver Ponds Picnic Area and will likely be inaccessible for much of the work day.

Gear to bring: Layers (it can be hot or snow, even on the same day), rain gear, sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses), gloves if you prefer your own, day pack, lunch and snacks, and at least 2 liters of water per person.

Note: Participants should expect to be out for the entire time in variable weather conditions from hot temps in direct sunlight to cold and windy conditions. Events may be cancelled or shortened if weather conditions become a risk to health and human safety. Please be prepared with a daypack containing everything you will need for the day (food, water, sunscreen, layers, etc.).
