Why Won't Parents Do What I Tell Them to Do?
Overview
Working with infants and young children means working with their parents and caregivers—but what happens when parents don’t follow through with recommendations or appear resistant to support? This training will explore the underlying reasons why parents may struggle to do what professionals suggest, including stress, trauma histories, systemic barriers, and cultural dynamics. Participants will reflect on their own expectations, learn strategies for strengthening parent engagement, and practice approaches that foster partnership rather than power struggles.
By centering infant and early childhood mental health (IECMH) principles, the session will help professionals move from frustration to empathy, building stronger, more trusting relationships that benefit the child, the family, and the professional.
