About this event
KINGS Artist-Run and un Projects are pleased to invite you to a KINGS Emerging Writers Program Workshop, When the object writes, with Azza Zein
___
KINGS will be open from 6:00pm, and the workshop starts at 6:30pm sharp, running until 8:00pm.
___
WHEN THE OBJECT WRITES
Think of an object that you would like to embody.
What is its story? How does it move, change, or act in the world? How have other writers, theorists, or artists represented this object?
What did the object witness and how does it remember?
During the workshop we will discuss creative strategies to write from the point of view of objects or materials. You can bring a sample writing you wrote or bring the object and a few sources (artworks, texts, or theoretical writings, that relate to it).
___
Recommended readings before the workshop are:
Azza Zein, "Coinage," Art+Australia 6, Vol. 56.1 (2019): 127–133.
Michael Taussig, chapter 7 and / or 8 in I Swear I Saw This: Drawings in Fieldwork Notebooks, Namely My Own (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2011), 68–77.
Please bring a pen and paper or laptop to write on.

Azza Zein is an interdisciplinary artist and writer living in Narrm/Melbourne. Her artistic research focuses on materialising the fluid relationships between body/object, land, and labour, drawing on a variety of methodologies from ficto-critical writing, exploring materiality, socially engaged events, and archival methods. Her essays often explore how artworks comment on the dematerialisation of the economy and the invisibility of labour. She has published in journals like Art + Australia, Kohl Journal for Body and Gender Research, and un Extended. She has contributed an essay to the Care Ethics and Art anthology (Routledge) and catalogue essays to ACCA publications.
In 2025, she is un Projects guest-editor for issue 19.2.
