When Seeing is Not Believing: Identifying Unconscious Bias is aimed at helping us identify our blind spots when it comes to people or groups who are different from us. Making snap judgements is a universal phenomenon- no one can avoid the impact and influence of the decades of messages, innuendo, and stereotypes to which we have been exposed- but we can do our best not to act on them. For this session, our goal is to engage in respectful, honest, and productive conversation that will help us identify the role we play in either furthering or dismantling instances of unconscious bias around us. In addition, we will discuss ways to address behaviors that may stem from biases others are not even aware that they hold.

Objectives

To define and provide examples of unconscious bias
To identify possible personal bias and examine its source
To increase awareness of instances when unconscious bias surfaces
To share stories of realization and overcoming bias (A-ha moments)
To discuss behaviors and techniques that promote harmony and decrease bias

Presenter:

Bettina Straight is an independent training consultant and the Organizational Development Consultant at Mercy Medical Center. She holds a BA in Sociology, an MS in Student Personnel Administration and has been training on various leadership and diversity topics for over 20 years. As a trainer, her goal is to help participants see a subject from a new perspective, to engage them in respectful, honest, and productive conversation, and to leave them with a sense of connectedness and new understanding. Using personal experiences, observations, and the wisdom of those who know more than she does (as well as a bit of humor), she is willing to hold discussions others steer clear of and for this event, invites you to join her in a discussion on Unconscious Bias.

What are my parking options?

Parking will be provided on the Rhode Island College campus. Details will be sent approximately one week prior to the event.

How do I pay for this event?

RIHETC will bill your institution directly for the workshop fee. Contact your Human Resources Office with questions regarding your institution's policy on professional development.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, that is not necessary.

What is the refund policy?

If you find you can no longer attend, we always suggest that you first try to find someone else from your institution who can attend in your place. We are only able to accept cancellations made 15 days or more from the event date. Cancellations made less than 15 days from the event date cannot be refunded and your institution will be charged for your ticket whether you attend or not. You may transfer your ticket to someone else at your institution at any time, however. Contact your Human Resources Office with institution specific questions.
