WHEN RAVEN SPEAKS I LISTEN: Land-Connection and the Nordic Spirit-World.
Overview
"I worry for Huginn, that he wont return to me. But I fear far more for Muninn".
-Grímnismál
These words are attributed to the Wisdom God, Óðinn, of his two ravens, named Thought and Memory. Written during a period when Scandinavia´'s native traditions were being systematically replaced with new Christian ones, and when old knowledge systems were collapsing, these words become much more significant.
Join Jósúa Hróðgeir, researcher for University of Iceland, Góði (ceremony leader) for the Norwegian Asatrufelleskapet, and vocalist for the band Nexion as he explores the sources for the Old Nordic views on the spiritworld, nature, and our relationship with them.
We will look at Fylgjur, so-called ´"spirit animals". We will explore the relationshp people had with "Landvættir", Land Spirits, and the laws that sought to sever people's relationships with them. We will investigate the important ways that the Old Norse knowledge system was infused with landscape, the animal world, and the Spirit World, and we will read what both modern researchers and Indigenous writers and have to say about the importance of maintaining this connection, and what happens when you lose it.
In today's world, where people are searching for understanding, to find belonging, Huginn and Muninn have more to tell us than we realize. When Raven Speaks, do you know how to listen?
