Gregory Thielker: When Light Breaks - a solo exhibition

Washington University MFA Graduate Gregory Thielker is an American artist, currently based in Paris. For many years, Thielker has been focused on a familiar perspective, the landscape seen from inside of the car. He has taken this theme to ambitious lengths, with series documenting roadways globally, but at heart, his work is a visceral exploration of the unnoticed.

For Thielker, the sensation of movement has long been an inspiration. Whether in the detailed renderings of the road glimpsed through a rain-soaked windshield, or in his more analytical explorations of historic routes across conflict zones, motion has remained his central pursuit. In "When Light Breaks", Thielker turns toward speed itself—an element seldom captured in the stillness of painting.

These newest canvases describe a landscape in flux. Roads, trees, and sky dissolve into one another; light flares only in fragments at the horizon, as though forever just out of reach. Propelled forward, the viewer is drawn into a state where perception stretches and blurs. Working from photographs of roadways across America and Europe, Thielker employs photography not merely as reference but as catalyst—summoning feelings that transcends the optical. These works speak to the emotional terrain of velocity: that paradoxical freedom and separation found in speed, when the world unravels into a kaleidoscope of shifting color and memory.

Point of Contact: Nick Schleicher | Adam Handler | Brock DeBoer | Nick Veasey | Fanny Brodar | Dan Lam

In "Point of Contact", we invite viewers to encounter a variety of artworks that meet at the thresholds of material extremes and the boundary line where artistic vision becomes matter.

Here, interior revelations confront corporeal, skin like surfaces -  nostalgia gives rise to personal transition and softs and solids negotiate a shared spatial field. These encounters remind us that contact is never neutral. When things meet - whether materials, ideas, or bodies - they leave traces. They mark, disturb, resonate, provoke.

Point of Contact asks: What happens when inner and outer worlds brush up against one another? Moments of collision can also be moments of recognition. As spectators, we are implicated in this exchange in our everyday lives. We're left to consider not just what is seen or felt on the surface, but the entanglement that exists between ourselves, others, and the worlds around us.
