Event Details

In today’s always-connected economy, retailers need to deliver personalized services to customers in real-time in order to stay competitive. These applications depend on the successful adoption and implementation of modern retail architectures which include microservices, containers, and data services running agile and lean. Join us for a deep dive discussion on building world-class retail applications led by a panel of thought leaders from Pythian, DataArt, and Mesosphere.

Why should I attend?

  • Gain and share insights on designing, deploying, and maintaining containers, microservices, and data services (Hadoop, NoSQL, Kafka, Spark, etc) at retail scale

  • Identify technologies and methodologies to accelerate your time to market and reduce IT spend by leveraging agile and efficient hybrid infrastructure

  • Network with industry peers and thought leaders

  • Learn how to avoid rising cloud costs and lock-in risk as critical business apps are tied to public cloud provider-specific dependencies

Agenda

15:30 - 16:00: Introductions

Enjoy coffee and cakes while you network with industry peers and thought leaders shaping the retail industry.

16:00 - 18:00: Workshops & Discussions

  • Microservices in Retail: Terry Dhariwal, Solutions Archect from Pythian, will discuss best practices and design patterns for microservices and data services leveraging his experience at major retailers, including Tesco, Dixons Carphone, Sky, British Gas and PVH.  We will deep dive into architectures across various retail channels, systems, and services (e.g., product, price, promotions, loyalty, forecast, stock, etc).
  • Leveraging DevOps in Retail: Application development is changing paradigms. Retailers are moving to faster cycle development techniques and methodologies like DevOps and Agile Development, while new release and deployment tools like application containers (Docker), cloud platforms and microservices are gaining traction. Highly distributed teams and environments are normal for these days. In this modern world, optimisation of daily development activities can bring amazing results and increase the whole team productivity. Is setting up a development environment still such a complicated process nowadays? Anton Krasikov from Dataart will discuss how we can improve this using local development clusters and more.
  • DC/OS: The platform to support Retailers: Is your company running containers, microservices, and/or data services (e.g., Spark, Kafka, Cassandra, Mongo, Couchbase, etc)? In this discussion, we will share customer stories and examples of how DC/OS accelerated application delivery through CI/CD, introduced a culture of DevOps, and improved hardware utilization up to 80%.
  • Demo: Deploying a Big Data Stack in Minutes: Watch how you can quickly build and deploy a retail analytics big data stack that streams real time customer data real-time to generate product recommendations.

18:00: Q&A and Goodbyes

Experts will be on-hand for a technical Q&A and additional demos if you would like more information.

More Details

Retailers are looking for platforms to build data-rich and modern applications. These retailers are finding the adoption of modern retail architectures including microservices, containers, agile DevOps, cloud native, and data services are creating complex architecture, implementation, and cost challenges. Retailers must build more apps, innovate faster, and modernize IT to meet their business challenges.  There may be a rush to the public cloud to satisfy these requirements, but one must be careful to avoid cloud lock-in and avoid spiraling costs.  Enterprises often go to service providers for cloud-native platform services as they can be difficult to build and operate. The result is rising cloud costs and lock-in risk as critical business apps are tied to cloud provider-specific dependencies.

To serve customers at scale and manage the huge amount of data they produce and consume, successful businesses are changing how they build applications. Modern enterprise apps are shifting from monolithic architectures to cloud native architectures: distributed systems of microservices, containers, and data services. Modern apps built  on cloud native platform services enables apps to be always-on, scalable, and efficient, while taking advantage of huge volumes of real-time data.
