How you feel shapes how you live. When anxiety lingers, or sadness quietly settles in, the world feels small and strange. When curiosity or wonder returns, life opens up again. But is it possible to choose what we feel—to live always in that open space? Is it worth trying for? In this interactive talk, we’ll ask what an emotion really is, explore the leading philosophical answers, and discover what they reveal about the art of emotional life.

Jacob Stump is an associate teaching professor of philosophy at Northeastern University. His primary area of research is moral psychology in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy. He leads the Philosophy as a Way of Life Working Group at Northeastern, and he is Faculty in Residence for the Honors Program. He has received the College of Social Science and Humanities’ Outstanding Teaching Award. He teaches courses in the history of philosophy, human flourishing, and the philosophy of emotions. He is an associate editor of Philosophers’ Imprint.
