📖 What Is the Value of Fictional Stories?

Are fictional stories just a way to escape reality, or do they carry a deeper meaning for our lives? From ancient myths to modern novels and films, humans have always told stories—not only to entertain, but to make sense of the world and ourselves.

Some say stories help us build empathy, imagination, and a sense of identity. Others argue that fiction can distract us from reality or even distort the truth. So, what role do stories really play in shaping our lives?

This week at IQ Cafe, we’ll explore the value of fiction through the lenses of literature, psychology, and faith. Then, we’ll open the floor for you to share your own perspectives and favorite stories.

☕ What to expect:

• A short introduction to the topic
• Bilingual discussion in small groups with diverse viewpoints
• In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where any view is welcome

🕒 Schedule:

8:00-8:20 - Listen to a bilingual lecture on the night's topic while enjoying snacks and coffee

8:20-9:00 - Discussion in small groups

Afterwards - Stick around and hang out with new friends!

IQ Cafe is a place that wants to create a space for you to think deeply.We think it's a shame how many people go through life without reflecting on things that matter. It’s important to take the time to think about the difficult questions in life. It can be easy to live your life and just go through the motions.

The presentations at IQ Cafe are always bilingual because we want you to be able to practice Japanese and English! For the discussion time, there are tables with English and Japanese available. Let's practice language together!

歴史を振り返ると、人類はずっと物語を通して自分たちの経験を分かち合い、意味を見いだしてきました。ある人は、物語が共感や想像力を育てると言い、また別の人は、現実逃避にすぎないと批判します。

今週のIQ Cafeでは、文学的・心理学的・信仰的な観点から「フィクションの物語の価値」を探ります。その後は、皆さん自身の考えや体験をシェアする時間もあります。
