How do you develop efficient readers?

What is structured literacy, and why does it matter? Breaking down the buzz.

While the media is abuzz around structured literacy and the science of reading, there is still confusion, not only about what really constitutes a structured literacy program, but more importantly, why it matters.

The aim of this training is to provide an overview of key skills to master to become an efficient reader based on the latest research finding and how to apply it in the classroom. The presenter will:

- Give an introduction on how the brain works and what the science of reading says
- Share key skills to master to be an efficient reader
- Explain what structured literacy is
- Give an example of a lesson plan and what a week in general education could look like.
- Explain how this can be applied in ma ore targeted intervention or support dyslexic children
- Differentiate content for K-2 and for higher grades such as morphology

Audience: Elementary through middle school teachers (both general and special educators), aides, librarians, and school and district leaders. High School teachers are more than welcome to attend as well.

Presenter: Amy Gulley is a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), IDA Certified Dyslexia Therapist (CDT) and Level 4 Master Instructor with the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE). She has her Master’s in Literacy and Curriculum from the University of Texas- Arlington and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of North Texas. She has been providing direct dyslexia services to identified students in grades 1-12 since 2010. Amy has been working with IMSE since 2015 training teachers, tutors, administrators, and parents in the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading.

IMSE is the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education, which offers Orton Gillingham reading programs around the country and who trained PAUSD Special Education teachers and Reading Specialists last year.
