CHALLENGING CULTURAL WEIGHT STIGMA: A PARADIGM FOR SOCIO-PSYCHIC UNDERSTANDING AND COMPASSIONATE TREATMENT OF “OBESITY”
Course Description: In this didactic, experiential and interactive workshop we will discuss:
1) Current concepts about and causes of “obesity,” including:
- changing concepts of female beauty from the Rubenesque ideal to the contemporary requirement of hyper-thinness
- The effects of giant corporations that sell diets as well as beauty and style
-The chemical and hormonal consequences of agribusiness, which grows, processes, packages and distributes food
- The shaming impact of these industries and their advertisers’ on women’s psyches and bodies through the unconscious internalization of cultural messages
- The evolution of unrealistic pathologizing BMI measurements
-The effects of sexual abuse and violence against women on the creation of eating problems and body image dysmorphia
-The focus on the body as an illusory source of control and safety in neoliberal society, which slashes the social safety net while escalating multiple social crises
2) Clinical considerations of how to honor the embodied trauma of being very large in our society and thus functioning as the bad object for others:
-The application of our understanding of the impact of the social world on clinical work and the need to honor ourselves and our clients in the face of this culture
-Strategies of clinical work with large women
-Experiential interventions focusing on what it is like for the therapist to be near and to treat very large women
-Explorations of the experience of being a large-bodied therapist
3. Considerations and contributions of the Health at Any Size movement and other groups opposing weight prejudice
Course Objectives: At the end of this course students will be able to:
-- Think critically about the concept of “obesity” and its evolution;
-- Understand how most women and some men unconsciously internalize the hatred & stigma against fat.
-- Understand how the diet, style and beauty agribusiness and their advertisers profit from shaming women and actually create fatness.
-- Understand how to honor fat shame and pain with compassion.
-- Understand the importance of helping clients identify true body signals of hunger and satiation.
-- Understand the impact of organizations such as Health At Any Size and other groups opposing weight prejudice are organizing to fight weight prejudice.
Susan Gutwill, AB-PhD, LCSW is a sociologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist. She is on the faculty of The Women’s Therapy Centre Institute (WTCI) in NYC and of Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (CPPNJ) of New Jersey. At CPPNJ she has lead a study group for three years that is now providing CPPNJ Programs on Eating Problems and Body Image Suffering for Institute Trainees and for Practitioners in NJ and NY. She has taught, lectured and presented for practitioners for over 30 years. She is a member of Section 9 of Division 39 of the APA, Psychoanalysis for Social Responsibility.
She is co-author of Eating Problems: A Feminist Psychoanalytic Treatment Model, by Carol Bloom, Andrea Gitter, Laura Kogel and Lela Zaphiropoulos. She is also a co-editor and contributor to Psychoanalysis, Class and Politics, with Lynne Layton and Nancy Hollander.
She also teaches in many settings, most recently a case studies series co-sponsored by The Rutgers Graduate School Continuing Education program with CPPNJ.
Her private practice is in Highland Park, NJ.
