What Comes Before: Tolerating "No"?
Overview
Season 1 finale of the “What Comes Before ____?” Virtual Series.
This episode is trickier than the others, because some variant of “no” can easily be unavoidable long before a learner demonstrates the repertoires that support tolerance
of it.
This is unlike Receptive Discrimination ( RD), for which can confidently be said, “if your learner is not ready for it, avoid doing it.” Instead, let's approach “What comes before tolerance of ‘no’?” a little differently.
We'll still explore the repertoires that support tolerance of “no”, but we’ll also touch
on strategies for minimizing exposure to “no” and strategies for addressing it.
(In)tolerance of “no” is a ubiquitous challenge, highly correlated with unsafe behaviors-a high-stake example of the need for effective programming. Of course efficacy depends largely upon the strategies used when a variant of “no” is necessary, there is also a better chance of tolerance with learners who: tolerate brief delays, calm themselves when upset (perhaps in more favorable contexts), demonstrate varied interests, and much more.
Participants will be able to:
- List at least 3 learner repertoires that support a learner’s capacity to tolerate “no”.
