What are the Alternative Sources of capital for Entrepreneurs in 2025 ?

By Jim Roberts

Overview

Trends in finding capital are shifting. Where can entrepreneurs find new sources of capital like Family Offices and Venture Philanthropy?

Time for our final DEEEEEP DIVE Series of Events in 2025. (And we are barely sneaking it in on December 11th.) The DEEEEEP DIVE series is sponsored by Hutchison Law.

We have invited two NEW speakers to Wilmington that you have not met before at one of our events.

Amy Jacobs of Abundance Capital from Charlotte / Greenville SC.

Liam King of 2ndF , a family office in Raleigh.

What is Venture Philanthropy ? When I worked for a NanoBiotech organization in Durham, a company called Liquidia raised $10 MILLION from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. When Liquidia had an exit on Wall Street, the investment paid off with more than $60 million returned where the foundation could have even more of an impact. The company's product was a solution to a problem that the foundation cared about. Liquidia's nano delivery product worked to deliver drugs to the brain to kill cancer cells.

What is a family office? Wealthy families have family offices with financial professionals to handle the future uses of the money thaey have earned or inherited. If you have approached a wealthy person about a potential angel investment, the people with more established generational wealth may have set up an office to handle investments and donations so the family members can focus on other things which may include business growth.

These are two topics we have not really discussed in the ten years of NEW but as our entrepreneurs continue to look for angel investors and venture capital, we thought it was a good time to open your eyes to these alternative sources.
