An Việt Archives is back with another translation workshop series! In this edition, we are diving into the world of An Vi philosophy and its connection with An Việt Foundation.
For the first workshop, we are looking at an extract on 'Bà Mẹ Việt Nam' (Vietnamese Mother), through which we will explore the figure of the mother and its unexpected parallels with the Vietnamese Đạo Nho (Confucianism/Ruism), as interpreted by Kim Định (a Catholic priest, scholar and philosopher). From this, we will begin reflecting on the role beliefs play in the diasporic community, how it at once influences and is shaped by us.
- No prior knowledge of Vietnamese is required, a draft English translation will be provided
- Workshop starts at 10am and we will have a lunch break between 12-1pm. You can bring our own lunch or join us for a meal at Centre 151.
The workshop is going to be co-facilitated by Phương Anh from An Việt Archives and guest writer Thảo Tô:
- Thảo Tô is a writer and historian interested in diasporic communities within and beyond East and Southeast Asia. Her short stories and book reviews have been published in Wasafiri, diaCRITICS, Asian Review of Books, and Sine Theta Magazine.
- Phương Anh is a translator and writer from Hà Nội. They mainly translate contemporary literature from Vietnam and its francophone diaspora. They work part-time with Tilted Axis Press and volunteer with An Việt Archives.
