About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

These sessions are for young people aged 12-19 with a passion for music. The sessions will be a chance for participants to play, sing and enjoy music together, explore different music genres and learn from experienced performers.

Each month we'll focus on a different music genre or theme.

JULY - Music from different cultures

AUGUST - Jamming together working on a different song each week

This month we will be working on a different song each week. We'll start off splitting into sub groups. At the end of the session, we'll come together in a big group to play/sing the song we have been working on.

Participants are welcome to bring along their own instruments (although this is not compulsory). If you do bring an instrument, we advise on acoustic instruments only so that everyone has the chance to be heard - although small practice amps are acceptable for bass guitars.

Each week the session will be facilitated by Dean Stobbs and Siobhan Stanley who have undergone Enhanced DBS checks.

Dean Stobbs has a wealth of experience working with individuals & groups (including young people from Bilton Hall Community Trust) on projects that enhance mental health through participating in music.

Siobhan Stanley is a professional, freelance actor/singer from the North East who has performed at venues such as The Customs House, Gala Durham and Northern Stage. Siobhan has experience working with groups of young people and adults on several creative and educational projects in numerous local venues/organisations (The GlassHouse ICM, GroundWorks, TWAM, Sensory Spaces, Seven Stories) and is now a member of the Create & Connect Team.

Each week they will be joined by an experienced musician with specialist skills in the month's theme.

Note to Parent's & Guardians: Important safeguarding information around consent & collection from session/s

Young people aged 16-19 can book themselves onto these sessions and can make their own way home after the session/s unless they have additional needs which require further support from a parent/guardian, in which case the parent/guardian should book their child onto the session. If the particpant is aged 12-15 or if their additional needs mean that they would need consent from their parent/guardian we require the parent/guardian to book them onto the session/s.

Partipants who are aged 12 or 13 or those with additional needs that require them to be collected at the end of the session, need to be picked up by a nominated adult.

Participants aged 14 & 15 may make their own way home (if consent is given), if not then they will need to be picked up by a nominated adult.

Frequently asked questions

Do parents and guardians stay with their children for the session/s?

These sessions are for children who are unaccompanied by an adult. Our two facilitators have both been through Enhanced DBS checks and have experience leading sessions with young people. We have safeguarding measures in place to ensure the safety of your children.

Should participants bring their own instruments?

Participants are welcome to bring instruments which they can use to play along during the session but this is not compulsory. We ask that instruments are acoustic or that small practice amps are used (in the case of bass guitars), so as not to drown out other musicians.

Do I have to be able to read music or play an instrument to take part in these sessions?

No, all we ask is that you have an enthusiasm for music making and an interest in playing with others. These sessions will be a chance for participants to create music together.

Will there be a break?

Yes, we will have a short break halfway through the session where we will provide light snacks and water.

Do you have to sign up for multiple sessions?

No, you can dip in or out of these sessions and do as many as you like. You are welcome to attend every week (if there are spaces available) although this is not compulsory.

Is there a limit on the number of spaces available?

Yes, at the moment we are setting a limit of 20 (although this may change as the weeks go on). If you are unable to get a spot, you will be added to a waiting list.

What room in The Customs House are the sessions held in?

The sessions are held in The Daltons Suite which is accessed by walking up the stairs and across the little bridge. This room is also accessible via a lift. There are toilet facilities adjoining the room.
