Join collage and mixed media artist Robin Roberts as we explore personal expression through layering of found imagery, painted papers and mark making.
In this class, we will explore the art of collage through the lens of influential modern and contemporary artists, including Deborah Roberts, Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Höch and others.
Students will explore:
- historical and contemporary contexts of collage
- how to analyze and apply composition and storytelling techniques from influential artists
- different collage methods including surrealism, abstraction, and layering
- creating a unique visual language through hands-on practice
Through the use of found imagery, personal photographs, and painted papers, students will create their own unique compositions. Each week will focus on specific approaches to composition, storytelling, and material, offering inspiration and guidance for students to experiment and express their own visual narratives.
We'll begin each class with a look at the featured artists work and process, followed by ideation exercises, technique demos, and art-making. Instructor will provide one on one critiques.
By the end of the course, students will have created multiple pieces and developed a personal style and voice within the collage medium.
Supply List for Students to Bring:
This is a studio class and students will be using their supplies on the first week.
- All your painting supplies (paints, palette knife, and various size brushes etc.)
- heavy mixed media paper or hot press (smooth) watercolor paper, in sizes 9x12 or 11x14
- scissors
- exact-o knife
- self healing mat
- YES paste
- Golden's Satin Glazing Liquid
- a few brushes
- wet wipes
- magazines and books (for found imagery)
- personal photographs (original or photo copies)
- a collection of papers (gelli printed, drawings, maps, etc.)and/or fabric
- additional paper ephemera will be supplied by the instructor
- cotton rags or Blue Shop Towels
