Description

Brief Description:

Tired of publishing PDF maps on the web? Come learn the fundamentals of how to translate your map into a web map. This workshop is intended for students, nonprofits, and government agencies interested in incorporating web maps into their work.

By the end of the workshop you should know how to make a simple web map, plus understand web mapping in broad terms, and have enough information to hire a developer, write a grant, or know where to start with your own learning objectives when your goal is to create and sustain a larger project.

By the end of the four weeks you will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of front-end development, including web hosting, HTML, CSS and Javascript.

  • Prepare maps on online mapping platforms.

  • Evaluate the structure, style, and fundamental purpose of a web map both critically and pragmatically.

  • Differentiate the various ways to build interactivity into maps on the Web.

  • Evaluate the feasibility a web mapping projects based on resources available for implementation.

  • Contribute to OpenStreetMap and other crowdsourced mapping projects

  • Locate the resources you need to learn more.

This class meets once per week (6:00 - 9:00 p.m.) for four weeks/sessions: April 9, 16, 23, 30

Important Notes:

  • While no prior GIS coursework is required for this course, familiarity with geographic data types will help you make better use of course materials.

  • The workshop venue may change based on classroom availability. Registered students will be given advance notice if this is the case.

  • If the workshop is held, as planned, at CCSF's Mission campus, computers will be provided for workshop exercises. Alternately, students are welcome to bring their own laptops.

  • If the workshop must be moved to another venue, students will be required to bring their own wi-fi enabled laptops to class, either a PC or a Mac.

  • The class will not rely on using an ArcGIS online subscription. We will take a very quick look at a few hosted services, but will mostly be focused on what goes on under the hood in a more generalized sense. Students won't need to purchase anything. We'll use free and open source tools where possible and, when we have to dip into paid services, will only cover material that is possible to cover with a free account. We will do almost everything in the browser, so your laptop should be able to run a modern one (recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer 11 will *probably* be okay, but is not ideal. Anything lower than IE11 is not advised). Other than that, you won't need a fancy graphics card or expensive processor.

Instructor: Dan Swick - he consistently earns rave reviews from our workshop students!
