Weaving Words: A Children's Weaving Workshop on Book Bans
Overview
Weaving Words: A Hands-On Workshop on Books, Bans, and the Power of Story
Monday, November 10, 4:00–5:00 PM
This Banned Books event invites children and caregivers to explore themes of freedom, inclusion, and storytelling through a guided weaving activity inspired by Ellis Angel’s exhibition now on display at the library. Using accessible materials, the workshop encourages self-expression and sparks age-appropriate conversations around book bans and the right to read.
Participants will build simple looms with popsicle sticks and twine, then weave with strips of paper, ribbons, and pre-printed or hand-written text. These strips may feature empowering phrases, banned book quotes, or responses to prompts such as “What book means a lot to you?” or “Why do stories matter?” For younger children, bold, illustrated word strips and colorful paper will be available to mix and match.
Free and open to families with children ages 5 and up.
