Storytelling has long been used by the working class to preserve joy, and solidarity, as well as pass down traditions and knowledge. It has also been used to make sense of the world’s injustices and reimagine alternative ways of living. For the working class, storytelling is as much an educational tool as it is a form of resistance and instrument for revolution.

We will look at storytelling as a tool of working-class revolution and resistance over six sessions (to be held over zoom). This theme forms part of the Working Class Climate Alliance’s reading group series, where we explore the histories, strategies, and cultural practices that have shaped working-class struggles across time. Each theme will comprise of six sessions in total – with the last one being a panel discussion where we will invite speakers to share their experiences and work in this area.

Each month, our reading group sessions will centre around storytelling as it connects to a specific site of struggle:

  • October 9th (Thursday) 3pm - 4.30pm GMT +1 – Classism.
  • November 12th (Wednesday) 3pm - 4.30pm GMT +1 – Trade union organising.
  • December (date and time TBD) – Anti-colonial movements.
  • January (date and time TBD) – Linguistic imperialism.
  • February (date and time TBD) – Climate justice.
  • March (date and time TBD) – Panel discussion with invited speakers.

For our first October session we will look at storytelling and classism – how storytelling has been a means of uncovering and resisting classism in everyday life: whether imposed by the state or the broader population.

Although it is best if you can make all sessions to grasp the full breadth of the theme, do not worry if this is not possible! No prior knowledge is necessary to make the most of each session. These will be friendly, open spaces for people to reflect on the readings and bring their own experiences to the table.

Our reading group sessions are always free to attend - however if you do have the means to purchase a solidarity/super solidarity ticket we would be forever grateful, as the WCCA operates on an incredibly small budget. All proceeds will go towards the development of our reading group sessions.
