OCTOBER TOPIC : How to Set Goals and Objectives for your Volunteer Program

What do you hope to achieve and how will you achieve it within your volunteer programs?

In October's Volunteer Coordinator Learning Circle, we will talk about setting goals and objectives for your volunteer program. Right sizing your organization's volunteer needs is a real challenge. Goal setting for your volunteer program can help ensure that you are getting the number of volunteers and the desired volunteers to support your work. Has your organization added new or expanded programs but failed to focus goals around volunteers who will support these expanded offerings? We know that this is sometimes overlooked or underestimated. Most importantly, goals can help us examine volunteer activities and make sure they remain tied in to the organization's mission. These goals can also help volunteers understand the role they play in supporting the organization's mission. Few things seem more important than this objective.

Our learning circle will kick off with introductions and then an overview of the topic and some all-group discussions. Be sure to check out this Linkedin article on SMART objectives + initiatives. This article focuses on how you can increase volunteer engagement by setting goals. These articles can help lay a foundation of understanding especially if this is a new topic of consideration for you and they will guide our discussions when we gather.

We will also go into breakout rooms and discuss these questions.

1. Do you engage in strategic planning and goal setting for your volunteer program? Is it included in larger organizational planning processes or is it separate? How much time/effort is invested in goal setting?

2. What is your overall objective with your volunteer program?

3. Have you considered goals that help measure volunteer impact?

4. What kind of goals do you have or would you like to explore around volunteer satisfaction?

5. Do you have goals tied to onboarding, retention, or ongoing education for volunteers?
